Pro-active Acne Care

As a GP, skin health advocate, and mother, I often meet teenagers struggling with their skin and feeling overwhelmed about where to begin. Acne is a normal part of growing up, but that doesn’t make it easy—especially today, when filtered, flawless skin dominates social media feeds.

If you're a parent or teenager reading this, know this: Acne is a medical disorder, and like all medical conditions - some of it can be managed with over the counter remedies, and some can not and needs medical support.

What Causes Acne in Teens?

Hormones play a major role. During puberty, the body produces more androgens, which stimulates the oil glands. Combine that extra oil with dead skin cells and bacteria, and you have the perfect recipe for blocked pores and breakouts.

Other triggers include:
Stress (especially around exams)
Poor sleep
Bacterial loading
Harsh skincare products including make up and physical exfoliants
Genetics

The Emotional Impact of Acne

As a mother, it breaks my heart to hear teens say they don't want to go to school or social events because of their skin. Acne can deeply affect self-esteem and mental health. It's crucial that we treat acne as both a medical and an emotional challenge.

How to Care for Teen Skin

Stick to the basics: A gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen are enough for most teens.
Be patient: Treatments can take 6–8 weeks to show results.
Don’t scrub: Harsh scrubbing can worsen inflammation - if you feel exfoliation is needed use a chemical exfoliant that is gentle or designed for teen skin
Silk is everyones best friend: Natural silk hold properties to maintain hydration on the skin, reduce bacteria and physical abrasions on the skin so a silk pillow case is the ideal tool to protect your skin and hair whilst you sleep.
See a GP early: Doctors can recommend tailored options before it gets severe.

When to Seek Help
If acne is causing scarring, pain, or emotional distress, don’t wait. A doctor can prescribe treatments that can really help.

Final Thought:
Healthy skin doesn’t mean perfect skin. Supporting teens with kindness and evidence-based care is the best gift we can give them.
